The May 30th PCAS outreach to Garfield Elementary Academy was a huge success! The PCAS Curation Facility, the Red Car Building, is on the grounds of Garfield Academy in Santa Ana. PCAS volunteers presented six activities to 90 fifth grade students. Groups of 6 to 8 students rotated through the stations at 15 minute intervals. Tom Bogdan and Gail Cochlin supervised pottery making. Megan Galway led a discussion of rock art and the drawing of rock art symbols. Hank Koerper engaged students with displays of cogstones and replicated ORA-64 blades and supervised the traditional ring and pin game. Mark Roeder certainly had the attention of the students as he showed many fossils and casts from his collection. Jane Gothold and Bob Brace displayed native foods and supervised students using manos and metates. Scott Findlay and Sandy Zachman explained the importance of shell and supervised the drilling of shells for jewelry.
All the students were interested and engaged in the activities. Their behavior and politeness made them a pleasure to work with. We again thank Garfield Principal Nancy Diaz-Miller and David Lofink, Garfield’s Reading First Literacy Coach, for welcoming this event.
PCAS undertakes outreach events to promote understanding of our cultural heritage. Only through understanding, can we increase the protection and preservation of historic and prehistoric sites. This event would not have been possible without our volunteers: Tom Bogdan, Bob and Rene Brace, Gail Cochlin, Scott Findlay, Megan Galway, Jane Gothold, Hank Koerper, Mark Roeder, and Sandy Zachman.
